Questions About Jack Hastings
Jack Hastings is a Surprise City Councilman and lifelong West Valley educator. He spent more than 10 years in the Dysart Unified School District as a civics teacher, dean of students and assistant principal. He began his education at Mesa Community College, then earned his bachelor's degree from ASU and a master's degree in Educational Leadership.
Jack is running for the Maricopa County Community College District Governing Board, District 4, on the November 3, 2026 ballot. The board oversees the ten Maricopa Community Colleges, a $1.8 billion budget, and part of your property tax bill.
On the Surprise City Council, Jack helped cut the city's property tax by 25% in 2024 and cut it again as Vice Mayor in 2025, while the city added more than 100 police officers and firefighters. He will oppose new taxes and new student fees on the college board.
Keep taxes and tuition low, and open the books so taxpayers can see where their money goes. Build job training in trades, healthcare and public safety with West Valley employers. Keep campuses safe. And fight for another college campus in the West Valley, where only two of the district's ten colleges are located.
Families across the West Valley rely on campuses like Glendale Community College and Estrella Mountain Community College. Jack will push for job training built with West Valley employers, safe campuses, and another college campus to serve the fast-growing West Valley, so students can train close to home instead of commuting across town.
Yes. Jack played football at Mesa Community College, and he supports bringing junior college football back to Maricopa's colleges, including in the West Valley, the right way: with a real plan for the cost and no new taxes or student fees.
